Catie's Legacy: A Beacon of Hope and Awareness

In the heart of every great mission lies a storythat resonates with our deepest emotions. Catie’s Cause – Acetaminophen Awareness, a poignant and life-changing initiative, is no exception. Born from a personal tragedy, this cause aims to transform grief into awareness, turning a heartbreaking story into a beacon of hope and precaution.

Catie’s Cause – Acetaminophen Awareness

A favorite photo of our beautiful girl, forever 20.

Catie was my daughter, and she was a vibrant 20-year-old with a zest for life, an accomplished artist and equestrian, an embodiment of empathy and hard work. Sometimes I have to stop and really wonder, how did this happen to her, to us?  Catie was living life to its fullest.  Her journey, however, took an unforeseen turn when she tragically succumbed to acute liver failure, a devastating consequence of Tylenol poisoning;something she never suspected could take her life.  Nor would you suspect it could happen in your family, but it continues to happen every day.  Catie, like many of us, thought the use of Tylenol was benign. This is a narrative that is not unique to Catie; it’s a peril that lurks in many households, often overlooked.  I’ve had doctors tell me they will not keep this medication in their own homes, and frankly, I understand that now, all too well.

The shocking truth is that Tylenol-induced liver failure is not a rarity. Despite , many remain unaware of the potential dangers of acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol. Catie’s Cause stands at the forefront of this battle, armed with the mission to educate and prevent similar tragedies.

Catie’s Story

Catie’s story, the heart of our mission, is about Catie and the life she lived with passion and purpose, albeit cut short. Her spirit and legacy thrive through Catie’s Cause. It’s a story that we invite you to explore on our Catie’s Story page, which has become a cornerstone of our website, touching and inspiring many.  I often share that Catie was the type to “warn others”.  For example, if there was a product recall she learned of, she would pass that along so others knew to avoid a tainted product.  How ironic that she then would lose her life to a medication considered safe and widely used.

Catie as an infant. Did you know that Tylenol (acetaminophen) poisoning is a top reason parents call poison control?

As we navigate through the pain, we find strength in Catie’s memory. Her life, though brief, was a lesson in compassion, resilience, and the pursuit of one’s passions. Her love for creating, through writing, art and photography was second only to her equestrian pursuits and passion.  The beautiful banner on our website is Catie’s original artwork.  All are testaments to her incredible spirit. These aspects of her life paint a picture of a young woman whose light shone brightly in the lives of those she touched, as she looked forward to her future.

Catie’s Cause is not just a campaign for acetaminophen awareness; it’s a call to action.

Word Art Created for us By the Palliative Care Team of NY Presbyterian Hospital when Catie was on Life Support. It characterized her perfectly.

It’s an appeal to every individual to heed the warnings, to understand the risks associated with common medications, and to be vigilant about their health and safety. We encourage you to visit our Educational Resources page to arm yourself with knowledge that could be life-saving.

Our mission is to ensure that Catie’s life continues to make a profound impact. By spreading acetaminophen awareness, we aim to prevent such tragedies in other families. Every shared story, every tear shed, and every moment of awareness brings us closer to a world where the pain of loss gives way to the triumph of knowledge and caution.
